    California state income tax

California uses graduated income tax brackets in 2026, with marginal rates running from 1% to 13.3%. Only the portion of your income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, so your effective state tax rate is always lower than your top marginal rate. A single filer's state standard deduction is $5,540. California also withholds 1.3% of all wages for State Disability Insurance (SDI), which funds disability and paid family leave benefits.

What comes out of a California paycheck

A California paycheck has five deductions. Federal income tax and FICA (Social Security at 6.2% and Medicare at 1.45%) apply everywhere in the US. On top of those, California takes state income tax and State Disability Insurance (SDI).

California income tax is charged in steps: rates start at 1% and rise to 12.3% on the highest earnings, and income over $1 million pays an extra 1% Mental Health Services Tax. Most full-time earners fall into the 4% to 9.3% steps.

SDI is 1.3% of every dollar you earn in 2026, with no cap. It funds California's disability and paid family leave benefits, and it's shown as its own line in the calculator above.

Do Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco charge a city income tax?

No. California cities do not charge employees a local income tax on wages, so a paycheck in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco or Sacramento is taxed the same way as anywhere else in the state. Local minimum wages can be higher than the state rate, though, so hourly workers in some cities earn more before tax.
