## How US take-home pay is calculated

Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA (Social Security plus Medicare), less any pre-tax 401(k) contributions you elect to make. Federal income tax is progressive: it is charged in brackets, so each portion of your income is taxed at the rate for the bracket it falls into, and your filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.) sets the bracket thresholds.

The standard deduction reduces your federal taxable income before the brackets are applied — $16,100 for a single filer in 2026. State income tax then varies by state: some states levy no wage income tax at all, while others use flat or graduated rates. A pre-tax 401(k) contribution lowers your federal taxable income (and in most states your state taxable income too), but it does not reduce FICA, which is charged on your full gross wages.

Brackets apply to taxable income after the standard deduction ($16,100 for single filers in 2026). Married filing jointly, head of household and married filing separately use different bracket thresholds.

## FICA: Social Security & Medicare

FICA is the federal payroll tax made up of two parts. Social Security is 6.2% on wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500 — a maximum of $11,439 for the year. Medicare is 1.45% on all wages with no cap. High earners also pay an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single), $250,000 (married filing jointly) or $125,000 (married filing separately).

FICA is charged on your full gross wages and is not reduced by 401(k) contributions. Together the 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare add up to 7.65% of wages up to the wage base.

## Filing status & the standard deduction

Your filing status sets both your standard deduction and your bracket thresholds. The 2026 standard deductions are: Single $16,100; Married filing jointly $32,200; Head of household $24,150; Married filing separately $16,100. Married couples filing jointly get roughly double the single deduction and wider bracket thresholds, so they usually owe less tax on the same combined income than two single filers.

## State income tax varies by state

Unlike federal tax, state income tax differs by state. Eight states have no wage income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Some states use a single flat rate, while others use graduated brackets — for example California's top marginal rate reaches 13.3%. This calculator covers all 50 states plus DC for 2026, and it excludes local and city income taxes.
